Mr. Alvin Lois E. Pembarat, Director of the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) of MSU-Maguindanao, served as one of the Filipino fellows in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Professional Fellows Program (YSEALI-PFP) Spring Cycle 1 under the theme Civic Engagement, held in the United States.
The YSEALI Professional Fellows Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is designed to strengthen leadership capacities of emerging Southeast Asian leaders through professional placements, cultural exchange, and collaborative learning. The program runs for approximately five to six weeks, equipping fellows with practical skills and global perspectives to address pressing community issues.
The fellowship also featured the YSEALI PFP Forum in Washington, D.C., where fellows from across Southeast Asia gathered to exchange insights, present their engagements and proposals, and build regional networks anchored on civic engagement and innovation.
In addition, Pembarat, together with other Filipino fellows, conducted a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the Philippines in Washington, D.C., where they met Ph Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel del Gallego Romualdez, along with Deputy Chief of Mission Felipe Cariño III and Consul Mark Lim. The engagement highlighted the role of Filipino youth leaders in strengthening international cooperation and advancing national development priorities.
Pembarat’s participation in the international fellowship was fully supported by MSU-Maguindanao Chancellor Bai Hejira Nefertiti Limbona, reflecting the university’s continued commitment to global engagement, peace education, and leadership development. Through this experience, Pembarat further strengthens MSU-Maguindanao’s presence in global platforms, contributing to the advancement of civic engagement and peacebuilding initiatives in the Bangsamoro region and beyond.
