Prevention is Key: Insights from the Capacity Building on Fire Prevention and Rescue Seminar Workshop
#MSUMag | The Mindanao State University-Maguindanao Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee (DRMMC), led by Prof. Yashier Hadji T. Kasan and National Service Training Program (NSTP) headed by Prof. Regina P. Canja, in partnership with the 6th Infantry Division, 549th Engineer Battalion headed by its Commanding Officer LTC Donald C. Hugo (CE) PA and BFP-BARMM headed by, its Regional Director CSUPT Jerry C. Lamanero, conducted a Seminar-Workshop on Fire Prevention Drill and Basic Search and Rescue Technique on April 15, 2023, at Datu Odin Sinsuat Gymnasium, MSU-Maguindanao Campus.
The DRRMC organized this seminar-workshop as part of its mandate to train and capacitate the constituents of the University in handling untoward incidents such as calamities, disasters, and emergencies. The event aimed to equip the participants with the necessary skills to effectively and calmly manage calamities or medical emergencies.
Dante Kusain, Senior Fire Officer III of BFP-BARMM, commended the initiative and programs of MSU-Maguindanao in implementing school-based disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), including seminars and trainings such as fire prevention drills and basic search and rescue techniques. BFP-BARMM and 549th Engineer (Kapayapaan) Battalion 6ID PA have also extended their support and assistance for any future plans, programs, and trainings to be conducted by the DRRM unit of MSU Maguindanao.
The attendees received comprehensive training on handling fire extinguishers, which included practical experience using them to spray water from a fire truck. They were instructed on proper techniques for holding, operating, and aiming a fire extinguisher, including manipulating its components such as the nozzle, pressure gauge, and safety pin. They were also taught to aim the nozzle at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion to effectively extinguish the flames.
The participants of the activity are from the offices of Infirmary, Security, DSA, SDO, Admissions, and GAD. Also, 3 faculty/staff and 17 student leaders from each college and departments, 15 participants from the dormitories, and 40 individuals from DRRMC and NSTP joined the said program.
