MSU - Maguindanao Engages with CHED Commissioner Ethel Valenzuela to Strengthen Internationalization Initiatives

Mindanao State University-Maguindanao headed by Chancellor Bai Hejira Nefertiti M. Limbona, paid a courtesy visit to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela on September 16, 2024, at the CHED in Quezon City, Philippines.

Chancellor Limbona shared MSU-Maguindanao’s efforts in serving grassroots communities and supporting students. She emphasized the university’s international partnerships, which include agreements with Kastamonu University in the Republic of Turkiye, Kansas University in the United States of America, and Chitkara University in India, among others.

CHED Commissioner Valenzuela, who also represents CHED on matters related to internationalization and lifelong learning across various inter-agency and inter-governmental committees, provided insights on how MSU-Maguindanao could strengthen its internationalization efforts. She discussed strategies to enhance the university’s global presence, including visibility of international partnerships—not just with academic institutions but also with international non-government organizations—accreditation of academic programs, and the pursuit of inclusion in global academic rankings.

Joining the meeting were Mr. Anfernee P. Ruanto, Executive Assistant to Commissioner Valenzuela, Vice Chancellor Raquel D. Santiago-Arenas, Vice Chancellor Marissa N. Parcon, Campus Secretary Nicole Alava, Mr. Grant Warren Lu, and Mr. Datu Nazrullah Abdul Rauf S. Macalandong.


CHED Commissioner Valenzuela is the first Filipina to serve as Director of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) secretariat. She has also been the ASEAN Education Advisor on the Future of Education. Additionally, she served as a UNESCO Education Commissioner from 2003 to 2010 and was a governing board member of UNESCO’s Centre for Lifelong Learning and Institute for Statistics. Commissioner Valenzuela has also held academic and administrative positions at the University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU).
