Expanding Educational Opportunities: MSU-Maguindanao's Extension Campus in Parang Municipality is underway
#MSUMagAt50 | Mindanao State University-Maguindanao headed by Chancellor Bai Hejira Nefertiti M. Limbona, PhD and Municipality of Parang, headed by Municipal Mayor Cahar P. Ibay inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of the MSU-Maguindanao Extension Campus in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte. The ceremonial signing was witnessed by Vice Governor of Maguindanao del Norte Abdulnasser Abas and Vice Mayor of Parang Adnan Biruar and other LGU officials on May 6, 2024 at Jamaica, Alnor Hotel, Cotabato City.
The MOA solidifies the establishment of an extension campus of Mindanao State University-Maguindanao in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte. This will increase access to higher education for the municipality’s residents, with a focus on leadership and governance skills. The program aims to contribute to the region’s development by equipping students with relevant skills and fostering collaboration with the community. The agreement outlines offering specific undergraduate and graduate programs to address the local demand for such education. The curriculum also aims to develop qualified graduates with strong knowledge and capabilities in leadership, management, and strategic decision-making. The extension campus serves to promote continuous learning opportunities for those facing geographic limitations. It will also bridge the gap between the university and the community by encouraging active participation in educational processes and development initiatives. The MOA emphasizes maintaining high educational standards and program effectiveness through monitoring and evaluation. Furthermore, the university will provide student support services such as counseling, advising, and academic assistance.
Chancellor Limbona emphasized that a feasibility study was conducted to identify student preferences. Social work, Secondary Education major in English, and Agricultural Business Management (ABM) emerged as the top choices. She hopes that the provincial government may allocate funds for administrative costs as collaborative support is necessary to alleviate students’ financial burdens, including transportation, meals, and other expenses.
Hon. Cahar P. Ibay, Municipal Mayor of Parang, expressed his full support for extending the university to Parang. He stated, “Basta nandito pa kami sa Parang, supportive kami. Marami pa ang kailangang e-develop.” He looked forward to the possibility of expanding the extension campus in the succeeding years as needed. The signing of the MOA demonstrates the commitment of both parties to uplift the lives of their constituents through education. The 15 classrooms within the 3-story building offered by the National Housing Authority in Parang will now be a space for students pursuing higher education.
In attendance during the signing were Municipal Administrator of Parang, Usman R. Ibay, Sagguniang Bayan Secretary Omar Talusan, and representatives from MSU-Maguindanao, including VCAA Dr. Marissa Parcon, VCRE Dr. Raquel Santiago-Arenas, Deans, Directors, faculty members, and staff.
