Advancing Women, Peace and Security through Academic Initiatives in the Philippines

The Mindanao State University System hosted a side event at the International Conference on Women, Peace and Security, held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on October 30, 2024.

MSU System President, Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, opened the side event by emphasizing the university’s mission to champion peace advocacy, especially in regions impacted by conflict. He highlighted MSU’s role as a transformative force in promoting peace across the Philippines, particularly in Mindanao.

In her remarks, Chancellor Limbona underscored the pivotal role of President Atty. Basari Mapupuno’s support, stating, “The strength of the IPDM lies in the support of our President, Atty. Basari Mapupuno, who recognizes the uniqueness of each MSU campus and ensures that we are united as one MSU System.” Further, she acknowledged the expertise and ongoing work of each IPDM across all MSU campuses, highlighting each one individually. She concluded with a compelling call to action: “There is still much to be done. We must continue working together to build a future better than the one we inherited.”

The panel discussion featured experts, each presenting insights into critical areas of peace and security. For Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, Dr. Aldean Alonto, Peace Research Coordinator of MSU-Marawi; for Transitional Justice, Dr. Mark Anthony J. Torres, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Director of IPDM at MSU-IIT; for Camp Transformation Dr. Mario J. Aguja, Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at MSU-General Santos and former IPDM Director; for Diploma in Women, Peace, and Security, Dr. Princess Sheryn A. Mamucao, Chairperson of the Diploma in Women, Peace, and Security program in MSU-Maguindanao.

The discussion was moderated by Associate Professor Grant Warren D. Lu from MSU-Maguindanao and Associate Professor Yasmira Moner from MSU-IIT.

Joining the event were key representatives from across the MSU campuses, including the Chancellors of MSU-IIT, Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan; MSU-General Santos, Usman D. Aragasi, JD; and MSU-Buug, Dr. Shiela G. Magolama, as well as Board of Regents members and representatives from the Manila Information Office. Their presence reinforced the university’s unified commitment to advancing women, peace, and security throughout the MSU System and beyond.
