In celebration of Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month, the Center for Cultural Affairs (CCA), in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), spearheaded a meaningful event for the Indigenous Peoples on October 8, 2025, focusing on the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) at the MSU-Maguindanao Training Center.
The highlight of the program was a talk delivered by Atty. Rojean Romanes, a full-time faculty member of the MSU College of Law – Maguindanao Extension, who discussed the fundamental rights of Indigenous Peoples as provided under the IPRA. Her presentation emphasized the protection of ancestral domains, self-governance, social justice, and cultural integrity, key components that ensure the empowerment and preservation of Indigenous heritage.
Prof. Alvin Lois Pemberat, IPDM Director, underscored the importance of recognizing and amplifying Indigenous voices within the academic and social spaces of MSU-Maguindanao. He noted that the celebration of IP Month serves not only as a commemoration but also as a continuing call for inclusion, respect, and empowerment.
Afterward, Mr. Jihad A. Pelmin, CCA Director, provided an avenue for IP students to share their personal experiences, struggles, and triumphs as members of Indigenous communities. Their heartfelt stories gave a deeper and more human perspective to the legal and cultural discussions, promoting empathy and understanding among the attendees.
Among the attendees were members of the Kétindég Indigenous Peoples Students Organization (KIPSO), the University Peace Club, the Sining Kandidilimudan Ensemble, and other students of MSU-Maguindanao, who were also able to avail of the free legal consultation offered during the event.
Guided by this year’s theme, “Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development,” the activity raised awareness, empathy, and respect for Indigenous identities, reminding everyone that sustainable development begins with the empowerment and recognition of every cultural group.
