The College of Public Affairs and Governance started its roots with the Department of Community Development. As years went on, the department became very popular in terms of its involvement in campus activities like competitions in academic, sports and beauty pageants.
In 1985, a new degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Public Administration was offered. The CD Department then becomes the College of Community Development and Public Administration (CDPA). The student population grew more than triple with the introduction of the new program.
The college was renamed College of Public Affairs and Governance (briefly CPAG) on 2003 under the administration of the retired Professor Albaya K. Andamen. In school year 2007 – 2008, the college continuously gained its popularity with the offering of another degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Social Work.
The college reached its remarkable glory when its first batch of Social Work graduates passed 100% in the Social Work Licensure Examination on June 21 – 22, 2011 followed by 87.5% in the next batch of graduates. On 2017, Mindanao State University – Maguindanao ranked 9 among 118 State Universities and Colleges offering BS Social Work program in the Philippines.
The College is presently manned by 15 faculty members, 3 clerks and 2 auxiliary personnel under the stewardship of Dr. Maguid T. Makalingkang.
Among the faculty members who served as head of the college were: Prof. Usman Kusain, Prof. Magaloyan Kamid, Prof. H. Solaiman Nur, Prof. Marjuk Edris, Prof. Salimbai Dimalem, Prof. Zenaida Dianal, Prof. Albaya Andamen, Prof. Salbain Aljani and Prof. Manalindo Magelna.
